Private Stock broadens Cavalier’s social influence, especially his emphasis on Black love, by narrowing in on the ills that attack bodies of color. He puts the biases, traumas and mechanisms of Black survival on the masthead, and asks you to consume with not just open, but honest ears. His own Black struggle is a universal one, and this is the album of his that solidly draws the connecting line.
— Andrew Charles Ricketts

“Open Season,” the first music video from Private Stock features New Orleanians in New Orleans... the commonplace is woven with an evocative sense of secret knowledge, while mantra-like “Yo they huntin’ out in the open” and his riffing on those final four words is the sobering verbal gravity that holds it all to earth.

While working on the visual component of Private Stock I had a vision of the Black Christ. I cannot say where this signal came from, but the rabbit hole led me to Porto Bello, Panama a about a year later. At the Festival De Cristo Negro, I watched in awe the reverence and devotion to “El Naza” (The Nazarene), a striking Black Christ statue that embodied a religious legend of survival and perseverance of faith.

Guided forces compel Cavalier to take a journey exploring a 22 mile religious Pilgrimage on the northern coast of Panama. Here, western and indigenous archetypes reform our ideas of death, transformation, and rebirth.
— "Renaissance" Film

Being a mere observer to the 22 mile pilgrimage was not an option. I felt overcome with spirit and had to confront that nowhere had I ever seen an archetype of a Black man being the recipient of acts of supplication and praise.
The film that collaborator, Vashni Korin, and I came home with is an archived testimony to this annual observance. “Renaissance” made it’s debut at the New Orleans Film Festival and followed up as a selection to the Black Film Festival of New Orleans, the Amsterdam World International Film Festival and was a semi-finalist in the Prague International Indie Film Festival.
